Guide to Oakland

Guide to Oakland

In the unlikely event that you have some time to explore:

  • Study up at the University of Pittsburgh’s Cathedral of Learning, a 53-story gothic building that’s home to 30 Nationality Rooms
  • Visit two world-class museums for just one admission price – Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History
  • Take in the heavenly scents and sites at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens
  • Tap your toes at the Stephen Foster Memorial Museum, which contains one of Foster’s pianos and copies of more than 200 of his musical compositions

If you’re hungry or thirsty:

  • Redhawk is your best bet for coffee, but we have two Starbucks as well
  • Spice Island Tea House is an Oakland staple with a mix of southeast Asian dishes
  • Spirits and Tales, on the top floor of the Oaklander Hotel, has a great view…dining reviews are mixed but the bar is getting good reviews
  • Roots Natural Kitchen is a good place for a quick bite to eat – they specialize in grain bowls and salads
  • Butterjoint is a bit of a walk, but they have a great bar and the best pierogis I’ve ever had (please don’t tell my grandma I said that)
    • Their sister restaurant, Legume, is a farm-to-table, highly local (and a bit pricey) alternative
